Clive Branson's
Fishing Guide Wales

Rhondda Cynon-Taff

The Valleys of South Wales are known the world over for their culture, heritage and warmth of welcome. Rhondda Cynon Taf has a fascinating variety of places to explore, starting with the Brecon Beacons National Park that reaches into the north of the area The home of many different
species and a huge variety of types and sizes of rivers, Rhondda Cynon Taf is also a
great fishing holiday venue. Many anglers, old and young, return year after year to
further explore the wealth of fishing opportunity this area has to offer. The tributary
rivers Cynon and Dare roll down to the Taff here and both coarse and game angling
can be had on the River Rhonnda from Treorchy to Trahafod.

Clive Branson's

Fishing Guide

to
Wales
and the Borders

By popular demand from visiting anglers I have been asked on many occasions
“Where best to go fishing including best facilities such as refreshments, toilets, disable access etc”
Therefore I have introduced for each venue within the guide my personal
1-5 star rating *****.
Including my personal views, helping anglers decide where best to experience
this great sport of ours.
I recommend that you phone first and check details before setting out. You will need a valid Environment Agency rod licence to fish at any venue listed

The river is about 24 miles long. Its source lies in the mountains to the south of Tonypandy, RCT rising in the eastern slopes of Mynydd Penygraig (Penygraig) and Mynydd y Gilfach (Penrhiwfer), and the western slopes of Mynydd Dinas (Williamstown), whose eastern slopes feed the Rhondda by Porth. The Ely flows through Tonyrefail, and then through the grounds of the Royal Glamorgan Hospital at Ynysmaerdy, following the main A4119 (Tonypandy to Cardiff Bay (Welsh: Bae Caerdydd)) route through the valley pass formed between Mynydd Garthmaetwg (Llantrisant Forest), to the west and Llantrisant, to the east. Flowing through Talbot Green (Welsh: Tonysguboriau), the Ely is joined by the Afon Clun at Pontyclun, before heading east to Miskin (Welsh: Meisgyn) and turning south once more, reaching the western edge of the rural lowlands of City and County of Cardiff (Welsh: Dinas a Sir Caerdydd) immediately south of Junction 34 of the M4 motorway. It passes the Museum of Welsh Life at St. Fagans and then continues through residential Cardiff suburbs such as Pentrebane and Caerau and Ely (Welsh: Trelai) before flowing into Cardiff Bay, by Penarth Marina.
