Clive Branson's
Fishing Guide Wales

Neath and Port Talbot

The waters in the County Borough offer coarse, game and sea fishing, providing excellent sport for both pleasure and serious anglers. Along the Beacons' southern rim you will find 'Waterfall Country', a craggy landscape of wooded gorges and cascading rivers. Forest parks, meandering rivers and peaceful canals abound in this greenest of places. The 850 acre Margam Park, containing the coarse and game Fishpond and Furze Mill fishing venues, is a famous visitor attraction in this area. The Afan Forest Park and Gnoll Country Park in the outskirts of
Neath town are also popular destinations. Fishing can be found in locations near the striking Port Talbot docks, along the Dulais and Afan rivers and of course on the River Neath through the Vale of Neath. The Tawe also passes through on its way to Swansea Bay

By popular demand from visiting anglers I have been asked on many occasions
“Where best to go fishing including best facilities such as refreshments, toilets, disable access etc”

Therefore I have introduced for each venue within the guide my personal
1-5 star rating *****.
Including my personal views, helping anglers decide where best to experience

this great sport of ours.
I recommend that you phone first and check details before setting out. You will need a valid Environment Agency rod licence to fish at any venue listed

The river is essentially a brown trout fishery as the Aberdulais Falls forms a natural barrier to migratory species moving into the headwaters.  Although the National Trust, in conjunction with a power-generating company,  have installed a fish-pass at the falls to assist the passage of migratory fish there is no long-term record at present to show what effect the pass is having on migratory fish stocks.

The jack stones at port talbot is ok for some easy fishing, there are millions of whiting and pouting to be taken on fish baits etc. there are some nice strap conger taken at winter time as well as a possiblity of codling or cod if things get realy cold, but most are taken from the long arm pier at corus, but its worth a try. theres also a few dab taken. care should be taken on the large spring tides as the pier does become flooded and the jack stones can get very slippery which makes landing your catch harder. all in all its easy fishing for the lazy man. dab and cod are taken on lug worm.
